An Open Letter to our Parents

Welcome back to a new, and final, semester. I hope you have had a nice and relaxing break with your child and that both of you are now ready and eager to start a new term!

Studies show that students perform better in school if their parents are involved in their education. You have an important role to play in supporting your child’s learning. Please take the time to acquaint yourself with the curriculum and the expectations for the second term. This awareness will enable you to discuss your child’s work with her/him. Knowledge of the expectations will also help you interpret your child’s grades and to work with the me to improve his/her learning.

There are many ways in which you can express interest in your child’s education. Participating in parent conferences, encouraging your child to complete assignments at home, and reinforcing the value of English in society are just a few examples.

In the end it is the student him/herself who carries the main responsibility with respect to their own learning. Students who are willing to make the effort required and who are able to apply themselves will soon learn that there is a direct relationship between achievement and hard work, and will be motivated to work as a result. Regardless of their circumstances, learning to take responsibility for one’s progress and learning is an important part of education for all students.

Please encourage your child to pursue opportunities outside the classroom to extend and enrich their skills in English. The ability to communicate in English should be viewed as a valuable skill that enhances and reinforces overall communicative ability.

I look forward to a final semester of change, challenge and chocolate!

      Sincerely,

      ;-)CoffeeAddict

      Dear CoffeeAddict,

What a nice letter! Unfortunately I don’t think parents usually bother to look much into curriculums and expectations. Especially when they send their children to a private school they expect the teachers to take care of everything.

      Best,

You're absolutely right! That's why this isn't the real letter I send to the parents but rather the letter I wish I could send! Thank you for commenting!
