      Anxious Arts

One of the things I am responsible for as a Language Arts teacher at my school is to put on a play. The experience brings me to the brink of a nervous breakdown every single year. To me, there’s nothing scarier than putting on a 45 minute show for all the parents and the entire administrative team to watch (and judge).

So many things could go wrong. In my worst nightmares the students forget their lines, mispronounce words, stress the wrong words in the wrong way, mumble, and have forgotten everything I ever taught them about timing, intonation and vocal quality…

It is that time of year. We started the Wooing Wed Widing Hood rehearsals today. Before the holiday I told the kids that their lines better be memorized by the time they come back to school, or else. To my great relief they seem to have taken me (somewhat) seriously!

Another thing that made the first day back to school surprisingly pleasant was that my new “trick” to get students to stress the words in their lines correctly has worked!

My "trick" was simply to bold the words I wanted stressed in the script before I gave it to the kids. (I do hope playwrights don’t mind that teachers take liberties like this with their work!).

Here’s an example to make it clearer:  I am Red” (not you), “I am Red” (really!) and “I am Red” (not blue). The meaning of the sentence changes depending on what words are stressed. Bolding the words made it easier for the kids who otherwise would have had to figure out the stress pattern by looking at the context. Such a simple little “trick” but it made a big difference in the rehearsals today!

      Dear CoffeeAddict,

I know what it means to put a play for parents and administrative team, Even though I had the opportunity to experience it once in my teaching life:))

But, I'll keep your hint for future works.:)

      Have nice week

Very good idea CoffeeAddict. Good to see it worked for your students! I think it is a very good technique while teaching speaking as well. Students have difficulty of understanding where the stress should be. They are relieved when they learn that it depends on their wish most of the time :)

      Good luck with the play!!

      Dear Esin, Solmaz & Aisha,

Thank you for your kind comments! What do you think about the "taking liberties" with the script part? I am a bit worried about it. I also feel guilty for making lots of other adaptions to the play... Must remember to write a post about that...

That would make an excellent topic for discussion. I personally think we can do some changes on the script for the sake of our students. Besides, not every act may be suitable for today and the audience. I will give an example about it. When I was at high school (11th grader), we were supposed to act 'L'avere' de Molieré (The Mean by French playwright Molieré). Considering the audience and their level of literature and education, we made a couple of changes in the first scenes which could be boring for the audience. Besides, we have also changed some of the expressions there and it turned out to be an adaptation of the play. The result: People loved the story and the story seemed more 'realistic' to them after these changes. This may be a specific example but I believe we can make changes. But we have to hold on the basics of the play though, like making no change in the end! :-))
