Next week I'm starting a challenging enterprise: I'm going to start teaching a boy who was diagnosed mentally retarded. He had difficulty learning to read in Russian, and, though he has been attending English classes for a year and a half, he can't read in English. Thus, the main task is to teach him reading and some lexis. The boy is 10 y.o.
I'm currently teachig two girls, his peers, who are not successful at school. They are better at reading now, but it takes a lot of time and effort to make them remember words. With them I use the following activities:
1) Making words from letters (on paper and from bricks).
2) Making sentences from individual words.
3) Memory (classical, when you have to remember the position of pairs of words) with words, pictures and letter combinations.
4) Matching words to pictures.
5) Categorising games.
6) The game when they have to remember which words were in a set and list them.
7) Guessing which word from the set was chosen.
8) Dominoes and lottos.

Working with problematic pupils is a great challenge. It' takes much time and effert. But you should be patient in this work to train them properly and work with logopaedic. In our school there are a lot of pupils with speech disabilities and our logopaed carries out speech therapy courses with them twice a week for 2 hours. It really works. From September up to now she has improved pronunciation skills of about 85 students. I think it's a great result. As for your activities they are great, they really help, but if you work together with logopaed you'll gain more effective results.

Good luck to you. When mission is accomplished I am sure you will be the one who is more than happy. I am not experienced on these kinds of learners, but do you think story books with big colorful pictures and with only one or two ssentences help you teaching that student. How about reading a very short story together with the student and record the voice. Then listen again and show praise to him. You may use puppets and add the names on them and create a story. Seeing the names perhaps he memorises them. And with these name you may use simple sentences with lots of repetead words. I think writing words on paper and sticking them on real objects then asking him to do the same thing can help him. At the end of the lessons, I am sure you will learn a lot of things, at least you may become more patient which is really important.
