Fast learners, slow learners and something in between
Submitted by bogolepovasv on 4 March, 2012 - 18:55
As our on-line trainer Hugh put it, any class is a mixed-ability class. Therefore, there will be stronger and weaker students, there will be fast finishers and slow finishers.
It's easy with fast finishers. You give them an extra task, and they are busy, and don't disturb the others. What about those students who finish a task not so quickly as the former, but quicker than the latter? Those who won't have the time to do an extra task but need something to do those 3 minutes the slow learners are still busy?
Do you have any ideas?

What about giving open-ended tasks?
When open-ended tasks are done in the written form, there are also fast and slow thinkers/writers/finishers. They demand a greater mental effort, so here the time span is even greater.
It might be a good idea (depending on the activity, of course) to set pairwork and mix the pairs, so that slow- and fast learners work together. Of course, there is always danger that a slow learner might "sink" the fast one, but it's worth taking a risk to make the group generally faster .
