      M-F-F in teaching Grammar

      Hi everyone,

I hope you had a wonderful week away from the viruses of cold and flu.I have caught a terrible cold and planning to rest during the weekend.

This time, I am going to talk about grammar. I know that some teachers do not like teaching grammar. I am not one of those , but I am not fond of teaching grammar, either. Most of the students regard grammar as learning the rules and therefore they find it boring. However, if we do not overload them with rules of grammar but teach them grammar in meaningful context, we can make get students to like grammar. What I mean by meaningful context is not to teach grammar just by telling that today we are going to learn past tense. There are still teachers who follow this method. Starting with a text including the grammar point and asking students to infer meaning from the text is nonsense and waste of time for them. However, I believe that when we start with the meaning and than focus on the form, students understand it better and it is more memorable for them. Moreover, when we teach grammar we should not neglect focusing on meaning, form and function. We usually teach the form, but explaining the functions is really important. Namely, our grammar instruction should not only depend on form, but also on the communicative competence.

Here is a link where you can see a few tips about teaching grammar:

           Have a nice weekend :)

I wish you a speedy recovery! The flu is the worst! I have been lucky this flu season (knock on wood) but my kids have suffered poor things, especially my daughter - probably because it's her first year in daycare so she's exposed to all those germs... About the grammar teaching - I agree that it should be taught in contest (if at all).

Thank you Coffee Addict. I do not know if I will be able to recover since neither modern medicine nor the alternatives have helped for 6 days and I have constant headache! Anyway, I struggle :) Hope your daughter gets well soon.
