Difficulties of teaching English are being solved by skills of teacher profession. First, you should have your studens interests in the class room. Sometimes I give them some examples about their interests. Suddenly they wake up. Then teaching is easier. That's enough for only that lesson. Every time you should find a proper example.
When you do it, "a new day, a new start". good lessons :)

It is the same with the adults. If you ask me to talk about politics I may say one or two sentences but if you ask me to talk about my job or something else I like you can't stop me :)
My students used to like football or horro movies 'saw' they wanted to talk about saw but I couldn't :)
If they don't personalize the language of course they will get bored. If we don't know our students, they may prepare questionnaires about their likes&dislikes and we can make use of the result :)

I was at Gulfem Aslan’s workshop and she asked us I believe a very intriguing question. She asked: ‘ Do you know the popular terms that your students use these days?’ And we actually could not give a proper answer.
Sometimes, we teachers and as we get older -well, not that old yet but you know – we do not speak their language anymore like we basically do not know their interests in a way.
And as you say in order to give examples of things that interests them we should be able to in a way know their language/the terms they use/their interests, etc. That's I believe the only way that we can give them a proper example as you put it. That's how you engage your students.
But then is it enough to sustain your students' motivation for the rest of the day?
