      WIKIs: W(orking) I(nteractively) in a K(ool) way on the I (nternet)

WIKI means quick in Hawaiian language and it provides a quick and colloborative work environent on the web. For me, a teacher who likes integrating Wikis into teaching this Web 2.0 tool means collaborative web writing; problem solving and project based cooperative learning. Wikis have great potential to foster group sense and participation, critical reading and questioning skills. I believe that they can combine strengths of print and oral learning paradigms and meet learning styles of new generation students who are digital natives

I carried out a project with a former class of mine. I introduced wiki through videos (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dnL00TdmLY ) and other student generated examples. Then, I opened up a class wiki and asked students to sign in and respond to the task charted out on the class wiki page. Here is the link if you would like to take a look at what we did; http://ozuadvance04.wikispaces.com/

At the beginning we started working in class to trouble shoot technical or any other difficulties. Then gradually, by using cheat sheets for learner training (click on this do that…etc.) we started to work outside class.

Wikis can be used in class in a variety of ways; lesson summary, notes collaboration, concept introduction, learning from one another and sharing ideas/conducting on-line debates and collection of web-pages/resources for self-access study.

      Now,  your turn :)

Have you used this web tool? How did it go?

If not, would you be interested in using a wiki? What about classroom management considerations?

You summarized nicely all the advantages of using a wiki with students. Your wiki looks nice.

I have been using wikis for two years now and I love them. Last year my students participated in "Talking Cultures", a project by British Council. This is the wiki we shared with a class from Armenia: http://talkingculturesd.wikispaces.com/ My students loved working on it. I participate with a different class this year again.

I also have a class wiki where we prepare all the tasks for this year's "Talking Cultures" wiki, but there are other things there, too. Have a look: http://weplayandlearnenglish.pbworks.com/w/page/27776495/FrontPage

I loved learning that wiki is quick in Hawaiian. Especially as I am snowed into a tiny ski resort in Bulgaria.

And Asli, thanks for some web sites to inspire people who arent so familiar with them. Wikis are becoming a widespread teaching tool that teachers nowadays are incorporating into there everyday teaching. If your school, or your students have the technology and you havent used wikis then it is probably time you experimented. As Asli says above, once you get the hang of it the ways they can be used are endless. It also shows students that their teacher is keeping abreast of current technology.

If you havent already check out some of Aslis recommeded sites above wiki, as they say in Hawaii.

Dear BSanja, I checked out the wikis you and your students created and they are awesome! I have bookmarked them to show to my collegaues in Turkey. I think that you did a marvelous job (so creative, so entertaining) and your students are so lucky to have you! Thanks for sharing your work (world).

      :)

      Dear Asligokturk,

Thank you for the link. I love the idea. What I liked in your website is the tas about women in Turkey. It is wonderful to read about it and to tell you the truth, we are so distant in place, but so close in reality.

Thank you for sharing the website.

Those who are just starting to use wikis may want to read How to Teach English with Technology by Gavin Dudeney and Nicky Hockley. The book also discusses other technologies to use in class, i.e. Web-quests, Second Life etc.
