Oh An English Teacher, Pakistani?

Can A Non Native language Teacher, teach effectively? This question has been a point of controversy for many years now.

I believe that a Non Native Language Teacher can be as good equally and sometimes even better because of being a Bi Lingual Educator. Understanding the Native and the Non Native Content and context can be an asset for any language teacher around the world.

Since the new world of education is based on language learning Teaching of English has emerged as key component of Effective Teaching skills.

When I was studying for a Masters degree in History I realised that almost all social science subjects are inter related.Maybe the pure sciences are separate but history goes all along the line and the foundations are the world Philosophies.

Last evening my son , currently a student of M Phil in Agricultural Economics, sweaty but smiling after a successful presentation, opened his file and said, 'Mom, I must share this with you. Economics! Todays lecture was all Literature based- listen to this- and he started off, " Plato, philosopher Descartes, Bacon- and he looked at me - Byzantine Empire- 'History I said. "Plato's Republic' " Yes , son its all connected, and if you are good in English language you will understand it all. One must be an avid reader as well'

The electricity was off, as it was the loadshedding hour, a routine recurring phenomenon, and I had the rechargeable light. Well Mom I enjoyed the lesson today and my presentation was 'good' my teacher said.

I felt a real surge of happiness. My children and myself were lucky to have been students where we had probably the best English teachers.

I was luckier to be a student of St Anne's Presentation Convent Rawalpindi and my children learnt so much at home. I shared the love of learning and language with my family. Today we are known for our good English. As an English Teacher writer and poet I had to work hard. I read a lot. I wrote and rewrote. I consulted 'The Elements of Style' I have subscribed to the Writers Forum Writers' Magazine and Writers Digest.

To be an English Teacher in Pakistan requires a consistent dedicated effort, indeed.

My teacher who is a non-English speaker teaches so well. He is great in writing and speaking English as well. He may not be the best by he really sounds like a Native speaker. Only that he does not look like one. I also have a female English teacher in high school who teaches us so well. She may not be so-English sounding but her grammar is perfect. And when she writes English, she is also so good. So I don't think that a person have to be a Native speaker to teach a specific language so well.
