The Need for Reforms in ELT where English is a Second Language

In Pakistan English is a Second Language. It is Compulsory for all in Teaching and learning.Yet after all these years we the educators in Pakistan feel the need of 'doing something' to attract learners towards learning this language and learning it better and to a certain extent 'correctly' or in the words of Lewis Caroll's character the Caterpillar' correctically'

ELTR  Program of the HEC is now moving smoothly to bring that 'something' to the learning system .The Reforms!

There is definitely a need for this movement.

I have some important points to contribute.

      Firstly we need to

      Train Teachers of English.

      Then to introduce

Motivational Programs for learning other languages

and Thirdly to Highlight the importance of learning more than one language.

When people come together they talk. They need to have the vocabulary to exchange ideas and share thoughts.language is what makes humans different from animals.According to Philosophy expressed in myths and religions 'language is the source of human life and power'.it is not only the ability to produce different sounds but to combine sentence structures and to understand the sounds pronounced by the other speakers .Thus the skill to understand and interpret a variety of sound patterns and to have knowledge of words is what it means to 'know a language'.

The need to bring Reforms in Teaching these sound patterns is the demand of the time.Learners have diverse learning styles. Many technological items have entered the scene.Learners are faster than Teachers'

I believe that one more  though not the final but yet can be most effective is 'Using Art for Teaching Language'

Line Drawing combined with Words and expressions can bring the joy and fun to language Teaching and Learning.

Here I rest my case for comments and views, till the next article.
