In some cultures, students are expected to speak only when spoken to by the teacher

I believe the mentioned cultural setting is not productive in the teaching – learning process. One of the foremost reasons is that it creates teacher-centred classroom and rejects student-centeredness. It results into weak relationship and communication gap between teachers and students and it forms a classroom which is neither communicative nor conducive. The interaction pattern as pictured in the above situation creates hindrance in conducting activities like role play, peer work, project work, survey, group work, discussion etc.

According to various researches, it is a proven fact that all S >S pattern based activities impart more knowledge and help retain the information longer if it is presented in the format that invites learner participation.  If not done so learners are deprived of the benefits like becoming responsible, developing confidence, participation in team work, sharing information, learner autonomy, socialization etc.

The application of these activities is crucial to the extent that it is almost impossible to ignore them in any language classroom. Maintaining cultural sensibilities, we need to execute these activities in class in order to make it interactive and communicative. I am sure that culturally correct application of these group activities will ascertain the similar learning results as we expect to have in our language classroom.
