      English Teaching styles

To me, the best learning styles are those that focus on mutual understanding'respect and trust between teachers and students. Challenging and interesting activities that make students involve in class activities are very useful. As an example we cannot stick to what is written in English teaching method books but it is suggested that we  use them as a help to manage our class effectively and to find out students interests to make a vital, dynamic scene of real conversational or discussion  situations. Sometimes asking a simple questions from a teenager like "How would you like to be respected by your friends?" especially after a reconciliation from a hot dispute or quarrel when the background of discussion is prepared, is really effective.

As a practical approach to this matter, I suggest the followings:
1-    prepare a questionnaire to find out :
      A)    What motivates the students/what are their likes and dislikes?
      B)    What are their strength and weaknesses in the topic you want to teach (May be a placement test would do this better). Here we can adjust the teaching materials with students' level.
      C)    What are their cultural important values and obstacles?
      D)    Is the topic of discussion challenging? Do the students show tendency to participate in class discussions?
2-    Consider time and environment, the teaching materials

I remember one Friday; some years ago we took the students to a jungle, located nearby, on a picnic. The weather was mild and the surrounding was beautiful. They were all so happy that they began to jump, here and there, singing and laughing, playing all kind of group games. We had brought a whiteboard and asked them to discuss about what fascinated them on that special day. To my surprise even the shiest student began to explain what she found interesting. I am sure what was happening was as a result of new environment plus mingling with classmates, friends they liked best. I do not want to suggest sending your students to a nice place to learn English but I have to mention that variety in classrooms and teaching styles are very important. When we bring a nice video program, film…. to teach a topic in English , students become  more attracted than teaching the same topic on a whiteboard. On the other hand, Young students are full of energy and they need an outlet to consume their extra energy and also their aggressions. When materials are interesting to the students and teachers asks questions to arouse students' curiosity and the usefulness of the
topic being taught is clear for students, they feel satisfied and enjoyment of this satisfaction motivates them to learn more and more.

      Teachers' character
A problem many English institutes have experienced is that they come across students saying, "If you change my class, I will leave this institute. I would like Mr. X or Mrs y be only my teacher and please never send me to Mr. X class. What has caused this? If we investigate more we find out the reason. That's class management, teacher's personality and happiness students find in being with a special teacher. A frowning teacher cannot absorb new students.

       Dear Ali Asghar,

      Thanks for your nice comment.

I also come from Iran and quite understand what you say and do agree with you.

Now the question is "What exactly does make a good teacher"? I think a good teacher is someone who is careful with his/her teaching and cares even more about the learning of the students.

A teacher has different roles in the class:

      1- Manager or controller

      2- Organizer

      3- Assessor

      4- Prompter

      5- Participant

      6- Resource or Facilitator

      7- Model

      8- Monitor

      9- Parent/Friend (based on TKT)

In my opinion if I ignore any of these roles, I cannot be a successful teacher.

      Hi Ali and Amir,

That applies too here in Morocco. A teacher's style is what distinguishes them. I do also agree that a teacher has different roles in the classroom. Still, what makes a good teacher is not really his 'role', it's his 'teaching style'. You could try to be a good 'model', 'monitor',etc. in your classroom, but what makes you a successful one is HOW you do that. I mean your style in doing it. All teachers are assessors, but some do that in an anxiety-free way and some make assessment a stressful experience for the students.

      Hi dears, Amir  & Safi
Thank you very much for participation in this discussion. I have to agree with both of you and  praise your valuable comments. I think if we combine good teaching style with teachers' motivation, a nicely accepted personality and
behavior, we will be more successful in our teaching career.
      Again thanks a lot.

      Dear Ali Asghar!

I agree with u that students learn better when they have fun but I am going to add that the aim of education should not be just preparing them for future life ,it should be life just now. they should not ruin their present for their future ;however  do you agree that in some schools  ,specially public schools in Iran or countries that they are used to having dictatorship for long ago it is not possible leaving some of your power in classroom and having fun they will make a clown of you ?and even the people who are responsible of that institute(school) will think of you as a weak teacher who cannot control his classes! I think in order to implement democracy in the classroom something should happen out of the school in large scale .People and those who hold power and exercise it on others should change their ideas then in classrooms we leave our power and stand beside our students not in front of them!

      Dear Ali,

I have to add some more points to what you raised about class management. One important factor is noticing cultural aspects and the other one is our managers' views about running a class. We would like to have a happy, dynamic class but sometimes, as an example, maybe  even clapping in the classroom is considered as weak management or disturbing other students in other classes. We have to be very careful about these matters though we may not like it. I am sure all of you students are not making troubles .if we can settle the troublesome students somehow, then bringing attractive teaching materials l to the class will solve the matter.
      Thanks for your valuable views.
