Practice in reading aloud
Submitted by albertrayan on 17 November, 2009 - 09:01
Thirty years ago, when I was a class 6 student, we were given reading practice by our English language teacher. He made each student read a passage aloud every day. He used to correct our pronunciation too. The teacher must have believed that such reading practice helped the students to develop their pronunciation.
Now I teach ESP courses, mainly EST courses, at the tertiary level. I give them practice in reading comprehension and they also take reading tests. Recently, some of the students suggested that they be given reading (reading aloud) practice.
I would like to know the advantages as well as the disadvantages of the practice of reading aloud.
- Does any teacher recommend this reading aloud practice?
- Is it an effective language learning tool?
- Is it an effective language learning tool for adults?
- What are the merits and demerits of this practice?
- Does the practice of reading aloud develop learner autonomy?
- Does the practice of reading aloud help students develop their speaking skills?
I look forward to reading your views.
