      Practice in reading aloud

Thirty years ago, when I was a class 6 student, we were given reading practice by our English language teacher.  He made each student read a passage aloud every day.  He used to correct our pronunciation too.  The teacher must have believed that such reading practice helped the students to develop their pronunciation.

Now I teach ESP courses, mainly EST courses, at the tertiary level.  I give them practice in reading comprehension and they also take reading tests. Recently, some of the students suggested that they be given reading (reading aloud) practice.

I would like to know the advantages as well as the disadvantages of the practice of reading aloud.

      1. Does any teacher recommend this reading aloud practice?
      2. Is it an effective language learning tool?
      3. Is it an effective language learning tool for adults?
      4. What are the merits and demerits of this practice?
      5. Does the practice of reading aloud develop learner autonomy?
      6. Does the practice of reading aloud help students develop their speaking skills?

I look forward to reading your views.
