TeachingEnglish
What is the main purpose of education?

Nowadays English has a special and predominant role in the communicative sphere of the world. It has also a special identity in the field of education.A language is a medium of communication and interacting verbally in our day-to day life situation in family and society. That is why it is very important to understand what is the main purpose of education and what teachers want to achieve together with learners. In everyday life we notice a trend, that students, learning English in schools and colleges for 9 -11 years, can't express even their thoughts... It is true studying rules of English plays an important role, but I think the main goal of teaching should be student's ability to speak. We are all here to change and improve the educational system, to bring something interesting, some new proposals or solutions. Perhaps some of us will take note of suggestions and will use in our work.

March 25, 2012 - there was a conference organized by Teacher's Training Institute, Tashkent World Languages Institute and UzTea, British Council on the topic "Modern Teaching Technologies for Teaching Effective Communication". Each member of the above mentioned organizations said "Our students must speak". It's sad to see that some of the graduate students who come to school as a teacher can't speak.I would suggest using role playing, theater performances, group work, vocabulary games, arrange listening an speaking more than writing and translating and of course motivation. You should make them believe in their speaking skills, no speaking barrier :)

What we need most is a re-orientation in learning materials. In India, we as teachers tend to lay excessibe emphasis on traditional grmmar, even after this post-CLT era. We want to bring about a change in examination system, where we should test students'skill in speaking. And this must be recorded for overall grade.Listening should be given due weightage, and along with listening skill, we should encourage students between age group 8- 12 to speak. It is easy for them to speak infront of their friends once teachers give them topics to prepare and they may also make them work in groups where they have to speak in English.Activities and tasks are to be given. In this age of technology laden societry and with the support of Governments Speaking skill can be developed. We should not lay stress on Grammar in teaching YLs.Content should be given priority.Old conceptions need to be replaced with new concepts of communication strategies. It is high time we remodelled our text books to include a section on speking after each unit.

The same question bothers me too. Many of my  students have  an excellant degree in grammar but their speaking skills are very poor.We had discussed this problem with them. This year  my students and I organized a  drama club.  Last week I arranged one theater performance, students had an opportunity to demostrate their speaking skills.  As the result, they liked this activity and they want to participate in such performances  again.

Dear Dilora,Thanks a lot for your advice. I agree that during lessons teachers should use Modern Teaching Technologies.  Our goal is to make language learning efficient and pleasant. We must be flexible enough to give the possibility to adapt our approach to the individual requirements of the students. Factors such as motivation, linguistic talent, cultural particularities, openness have to be considered. The teacher should give the learner the opportunity to speak as much as possible during the lesson. The only way in which the students will learn to speak in language is by speaking it.For example, during my lessons I encourage the students to play a creative role in the learning process. In order for the student to be constructive and creative in his use of foreign language, he must experiment and we, teachers,  must help our students in such efforts.Very often my students make presentations with the help of IT on different interesting and usefull theme. After presentation there comes a discussion betwen students. Together we talk over it,  students ask question and suggest their ideas. I think such method allows students to feel free, creative and responsible for the results of presentation. Do you agree with me? What do you think about it?

I think you together with your students have found really nice method how to develop speaking skills. Also I would like to advise you to act William Shakespeare's plays (comedy, history or tragedy). For example: "King Lear", "Much Ado About Nothing", "Romeo and Juliet","Richard III", "A Midsummer Night's Dream", "All's Well That Ends Well".William Shakespeare  plays have the reputation of being among the greatest in the English language. During my practice at school together with students we also prepared the play"All's Well That Ends Well".  Students like to participate in such a great plays. During the performance they absorbed the historical atmosphere of the action, feel relaxed and inspired.

We are all here because we are creative teachers. I think every single activity that you held in your classroom helped students to overcome their fear of speaking. I always had one idea of inviting a native English speaker to the class, especially that's great for 8-9 graders and up. I believe that talking to him/her will give them quite different experience. The only problem is where can we get such volunteer?

Certainly there are many native English Speakers willing to help us in our efforts to develop english speaking skills. But we must somehow arrange their visit to our country. I think it should be a special organization of exchange of  teaching experience. I remember when I was studying at Pedagogical University, there was a volunteer- Mrs. Mariline. She came to Tashkent with her husband Jack to work on project. She is a historian by profession. Mariline herself decided to work at the Pedagogical University and taught in English. It really helped students and teachers to improve level of spoken English. And it is not the only example of voluntary participation of Native English Speakers in the formation and training of young generation. We all live on one planet Earth and we should help each other!

Now it is the Age of New Technologies. It is not necessary to ask people to come to share experiences. It is much easier to use modern methods. I would like to offer a simple but at the same time very effective solution in searching of English Speaking volunteers. Such proposal is to use program Skype. There is a special forum at Skype where many people are eager to communicate. They are online and that's enough for intercourse. It does not make any expenditure, the result is excellent. You can use Skype in your classrooms. Just connect and organize direct dialogue, students can ask their questions to volunteers, discuss various topics.
