      South Sudan adopts English

According to this NY Times article, the world's newest nation - South Sudan - has decided to abandon Arabic and switch over to English. The South Sudanese have also expressed a desire to join the Commonwealth. It's going to be interesting to see how they build the infrastructure for supporting English teaching and learning in a country where there are hardly any institutions in the first place, let alone English schools.  I wonder what kind of impact this language switch will have on their culture and how different this impact will be from the results of the imposition of Arabic.
