Reading and writing in a second language is a challenging task for any learner.

How do teachers rise to the challenge of motivating students to develop these skills and keep them engaged? In this video, you’ll see some efficient and stimulating techniques to keep learners interested, energised and on task.

Part 1 focuses on a range of techniques and approaches which have proved successful in sustaining motivation, whilst ensuring learning takes place.

Part 2 focuses in particular on learner responses to two examples of motivating activities.

Part 3 follows one teacher’s response to a challenging classroom situation, with successful results.

Procedure:

  • Download the session notes below. The notes contain discussion, video-viewing and reflection tasks.
  • Follow the tasks by going through the video in sequence.
  • The video and session notes are designed as self-study resources to be worked through together. Techniques are transferable to other classes in other contexts.

    The clips showed my own country kids....West Bengal, India and N.Delhi. The direct "touch by hand" experience is very worth emulation. Children will intake into the long term memory easily, asked to see in nature all what is mentioned in the lesson. Step by step, ad writing and news paper habituation is my manthra in the class....very real time methodology.
