About the webinar

Teaching is an emotional business. Sadly, many of us are familiar with the stresses and anxieties of second language learning and teaching. In contrast, positive emotions and sources of enjoyment in teaching are less likely to be considered or researched. This webinar presents findings from research on EAP teachers’ positive emotions within their daily lives. Frameworks from Positive Psychology, Exploratory Practice, and ‘sticky objects’ (objects that attract and retain emotional resonances) were used in order to better understand the lived experiences of EAP teachers in two contexts (the UK and Saudi Arabia).

In the later part of the webinar we present some suggestions for ways in which teachers can support their own well-being, work with their institutions to become more ‘positive’ places of work, and consider how teacher education can more helpfully include a concern for the emotional aspects of teaching.

About the speakers

Siân Etherington works in the University of Salford, UK as an academic developer, having recently moved from her role as a lecturer in TESOL in the same institution. Her research interests are in the psychology of teaching and learning, and particularly the role of emotion within these activities.

Judith Hanks is Associate Professor at the School of Education, University of Leeds, UK. Her research interests lie in the areas of Exploratory Practice (a form of fully inclusive practitioner research), intercultural issues in SLA and EAP, teacher education and CPD.

How to watch the webinar

Our webinars are free.

They take place in Microsoft Teams Live Events. You do not need any special equipment to watch the webinars apart from a computer with the audio on. 

Instructions for watching the webinar

1. When you click the link to join, you will be given three different options:

  • Option 1: If you already have the Microsoft Teams desktop application installed, you will be asked if you want to open this. 
  • Option 2: If you don't have the Microsoft Teams desktop application, you will be invited to download it.
  • Option 3: You will be asked if you want to 'watch on the web instead'.

    Choose either option 1 (only if you already have the desktop application installed) or option 3: 'watch on the web instead'.
     

2. You will be asked to either 'sign in' or 'enter anonymously'. Choose 'enter anonymously'.

Registration

You should register for the webinar at the link provided above. In order to receive updates and a link to join the webinar, you will need to provide a valid email address. Your information will not be used for marketing purposes unless you explicitly give us permission to do so during the registration process. Certificates

  • At the end of the webinar in the chat box
  • In the 'Thank you for attending email' that you will receive 1 day after the webinar.
  • At the end of the feedback survey once you have answered the questions.
  • You should type your name on the certificate and download it. We recommend using Google Chrome or Internet Explorer to do this.
Copies of the presentations

Where possible, we will make a PDF copy of the presentation available for you to download. However, for copyright reasons, this may not always be allowed.
