Managing the Lesson: self-study booklet

About this booklet
This guide includes short case studies and professional development activities to do individually and with colleagues. Featuring a range of engaging and accessible activities, this booklet helps teachers identify areas for development and provide ways to improve their knowledge and develop the skills they need in and out of the classroom. Teacher educators can use the materials with developing teachers to help assess and address their learning needs.
Teachers can explore lesson management skills, including:
- how to use the classroom space and classroom equipment
- putting learners into different groups
- giving clear instructions and checking that learners have understood
The booklet also includes how to manage learner behaviour and how to respond to what’s happening in the classroom by making small changes to the lesson plan. Finally, teachers are encouraged to think about decisions after the lesson and use that experience to improve ideas and techniques for future lessons.
About the series
This booklet is part of a series of 12 booklets based on the British Council’s Teaching for Success approach to teacher development. We have chosen an integrated approach which uses the British Council’s Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Framework for teachers as the basis for organising teachers’ learning. The booklets, framework and accompanying resources on TeachingEnglish enable teachers to understand and plan their own professional development pathway.
Each booklet covers one of the professional practices in the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Framework for teachers and is based on research into what effective professional development should involve. We will be releasing the booklets separately over the coming year.
This publication is free to download in pdf format.
