Judy and her co-presenters talk about their project run by Learning Unlimited, winner of the 2016 British Council ELTon award for Innovation in learner resources.
Women on the Active Citizenship and English (ACE) project wrote about their own funny, personal and less typical experiences of everyday life in the UK. Their stories were then edited and published as graded ESOL literacy readers with two versions of each story (Entry 1/A1 and Entry 2/A2) along with supporting key words, comprehension and discussion questions, illustrations, and additional free downloadable activities. This popular series is a concrete example of the impact of participatory approaches to teaching and learning and supporting integration.
About the speakers
Foufou Savitzky is a Family Learning, Offender Learning and Volunteer training specialist with over 35 years’ experience in the field. She is currently a Director for Learning Unlimited where she works as a trainer, teacher and writer. In addition to Family learning teaching in community settings and prisons, she is currently working on Integr8, a European partnership project which aims to support the integration of migrant women. She has recently been working on a Council of Europe funded project developing a resource pack for volunteers working with newly arrived refugees from Syria, Afghanistan, Eritrea etc. Other recent work includes developing family literacy materials for Family Skills - a national family literacy research project, and delivering volunteer training programmes.
Karen Dudley is an ESOL specialist with 30 years’ experience in the field. She is currently a Director for Learning Unlimited (LU) where she works as a Project Manager, bid-writer, researcher, writer, teacher trainer and teacher. Karen is presently managing Family Skills, a 22 month national project which is developing and testing the impact of Family literacy programmes targeting families who are speakers of other languages. She is also managing Learning Unlimited’s UK contribution to a European funded project Integr8, supporting the integration of migrant women in 7 partner countries.
Judy Kirsh, M.Ed (ELT) has over 30 years' experience in the field of English Language Teaching as a teacher, teacher-trainer, external examiner, consultant and materials-writer. For the past few years she has worked with Learning Unlimited on a number of European integration projects, having previously worked at LLU+ London South Bank University on a range of projects and courses including the development of Citizenship materials for ESOL learners and English/literacy teacher education. Judy has developed Continuing Professional Development modules for the British Council ESOL Nexus project, has presented at many conferences and written journal articles. She is a trustee and former co-chair of NATECLA, the professional association for ESOL teachers in the UK.
