This paper explores  the relationship between identity perceptions, declared learner achievement and teacher perceptions.

The importance of providing a personally relevant learning and teaching environment is discussed and the report provides several practical suggestions of how this can be achieved.

4,151 students and 161 teachers from Bulgaria, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain completed on-line questionnaires. The relationship between identity perceptions and achievement is one which has not been studied in-depth.
