Caroline Wilkinson and Amanda Wilson are both tutors from Boston College in Lincolnshire, teaching ESOL and EFL respectively. Combining research that they had conducted in the field and drawing on their own professional experience, Wilkinson and Wilson's presentation sought to not only debunk perceived historical differences between these two strains of ELT but also illustrate the benefits to be derived from a cross-fertilisation of the two tranches in terms of resources, materials and methodologies as a means of establishing best practice. The thesis that emerged promoted a holistic approach to teaching focusing on learners’ individual needs, the appropriateness of either an academic or vocational route in each given case and the importance of signposting accordingly.
