From English language learners to intercultural citizens

This paper explores intercultural citizenship and English language use by the international students in the UK.

While intercultural citizenship has become a prominent aim in international higher education, there is insufficient empirical evidence documenting the extent to which the experiences of students actually lead to its development. To address this gap the research explored the experiences of Chinese international students (the largest group of international students in the UK) before, during and after study abroad. Data was collected from students (n=258) in the UK and China via questionnaires, interviews and a focus group.
