I think that IELTS reading questions are so different from what students are used to in class that it requires a special approach. For example, Yes, No, Not Given questions and matching heading questions are normally completely new to most students.

I try to use a TTT approach. First we do a sample question and then talk about the common problems. Then we think about solutions to these problems and a strategy for answering the question. The class then does another question and this usually leads to a big improvement.
