This publication brings together papers from the 2019 Inclusion, mobility and multilingual education conference.

These conference proceedings are from the 13th Language and Development Conference and the 6th Multilingual Education Conference jointly led by the British Council and UNESCO Bangkok on behalf of the Language and Development Conference Trustees and the Asia-Pacific Multilingual Education Working Group. The conference was held in September 2019 in Bangkok, Thailand. It attracted 475 participants from 58 countries. Find out more about the conference

In the conference proceedings, you will find:

  • summary and highlights of the keynote and all plenary sessions
  • highlights from discussions and presentations around the conference themes; inclusion, mobility and multilingual education derived from various social media platforms
  • summary of the High-Level Policy forum held at the Conference and the resulting official Bangkok Statement on Language and Inclusion
  • highlights of the Early Career Research Programme held alongside the conference.

The proceedings are designed in an interactive and clickable format that will direct you to the resource pages and websites for an easy online-reading experience.

We thank the editor of the conference proceedings, Chris Sowton, who conceptualised and led the process working with Benjaporn Phomahad from the British Council Thailand.  Chris worked tirelessly and collaboratively with the Conference Steering Committee and stakeholders to ensure that the publication is comprehensive and accessible.

We hope that the proceedings will provide readers with insights into issues of language education and development that are happening around the world, that it steers conversations and continues to raise awareness of these issues in the future.
