About the session

The Role of English in Developing Countries

Mike Solly, of the Open University, will facilitate this event, which will mark the launch of the British Council publication Dreams and Realities: Developing Countries and the English Language. Hywel Coleman, editor of the publication and Honorary Senior Research Fellow, Leeds University, will give a short presentation, and then join Fauzia Shamim, University of Karachi, and Goodith White, Canterbury Christ Church University, to form our panel. We hope to hear a wide range of voices from the audience, on questions like: What is the role of English in national development? Does English have a role in combating poverty and exclusion? Can English open up opportunities for individuals? What are the issues for policymakers in developing countries?

Speakers: Mike Solly, Hywel Coleman, Fauzia Shamim, Goodith White
